Beauty is a great healer in this existence as I’ve lived it. Aside from my obsession to paint women, the beauty of sky, water, trees, rocks and wildlife still thrill me; it’s all music to my eyes. I make art to stay sane in what seems like an ever-accelerating crazy world. The more beauty I paint, the saner I get. My buddy Philip says I’m very sane. I exist therefore I art. ––Mendelson Joe ©

Portrait Gallery of Canada Purchases Tomson Highway Portrait by Mendelson Joe

Karen Robinson Gallery is pleased to announce that The Portrait Gallery of Canada has acquired Mendelson Joe’s painting of multi-media artist Tomson Highway. Mr. Highway, a celebrated playwright, musician and author of children’s books is outspoken on matters pertaining to injustices done to and suffered by First Nations aboriginals. Mendelson Joe, himself a self-taught multi-media artist, rarely paints men except his heroes and/or those males he satirizes as in the case of many of Canada’s politicians. The Highway portrait was exhibited exclusively at Karen Robinson Gallery and was recently published in Joe’s Toronto, Joe’s third book for Toronto publisher ECW Press. Mr. Joe states ”I am privileged to be born in Canada, I exist therefore I art.”

JOE'S TORONTO
portraits by Mendelson Joe

October 25, 2005 marked the launch date of M. Joe's second book of portraits. For close to thirty years, Mendelson Joe has painted portraits of Torontonians known and unknown, including: Robert Fulford, Robert Priest, Irshad Manji, Margaret Atwood, Bernie Finkelstein, Stan the Fan and Babydoll Grandma.

His portraits of Torontonians amount to a significant body of work, and, in Joe's Toronto, he exhibits fifty portraits from the experience. It tells both his story and the story of those he portrayed. Along with faithful reproductions of the original paintings, Joe has added his own brand of comments about the subjects and the sessions.
